Otway Golf Club: ‘big drives are for show’ as Dave Hughes goes for three-in-a-row

first_imgIn last Saturday’s Christmas Hamper competition at Otway, old hand Dave Hughes proved the old saying that big drives are for show when he won first prize with his lay-up tactics.Gerald Gallagher was one point behind in second, but could have challenged for victory if he and playing partner Paul Murray had read the signals correctly coming from the fairway at the third hole.Damian Gallagher as usual took the gross, with Gerard Dorrian taking third spot. The nines went to Martin Duffy and Pat McNulty, with nearest the pin going to Philip Friel and Shaun Duffy taking the longest drive.Dave Hughes was in the winners enclosure again on Sunday when he led his team of John and Odhran Patton and Charlie Coughlan to victory in the weekly turkey scramble with a very impressive score of 12 under par.Dave will have an opportunity to make it 3 in a row this Sunday, when the final turkey scramble of the year will take place at the usual time of 12 noon, with names in to the clubhouse 9158319 by 11.45 at the latest.Suggestions have been made that the names of players in the scrambles who ‘haven’t’ won a bird for the big day should be published in next weeks notes, but a decision on this will not be finalised until after this week’s efforts.
