Early reports suggest that the suspects first opened fire on people with Kalashnikovs before blowing themselves up outside the security checkpoint to the entry of the international terminal, after police opened fire on them. Casualty figures are expected to rise.Images from the scene showed the terminal in flames and blown-out ceiling tiles strewn across the floor. Security experts say that there are striking similarities between this attack and the recent attacks in Brussels airport.Scheduled flights at the airport, which is one of the world’s busiest and acts as a hub for Turkish Airlines, have been cancelled until further notice. Passengers are advised to contact their airline for further details.Turkey has suffered a spate of bombings this year, including two suicide attacks in tourist areas of Istanbul blamed on ISIL. The country is also fighting Kurdish militants in its largely Kurdish southeast. No group has yet claimed responsibility for today’s attacks.
