Since June, fans have been eagerly awaiting Wave Spell Live, a brand-new music festival from the jamtronica juggernauts of STS9. Slated for August 16th through 19th, the festival sets itself apart with its heavy-hitting, electronic-focused lineup and absolutely wild venue. Wave Spell Live will take place in Belden Town, California, a town with a population of seven, and for the event, the festival will rent out the town—meaning the town’s residents will leave and there will be absolutely no noise ordinances or curfews. In addition to nine sets from STS9, Wave Spell Live has tapped an enviable list of performers, including Colorado’s Maddy O’Neal, an up-and-coming producer who has been earning high praise from other artists and fans alike. With an emphasis on musical experimentation mixed with meticulous production, Maddy has been rising on the bill of renowned music festivals and embarking on nationwide headlining tours of her own.In anticipation of Maddy O’Neal’s performance at Wave Spell Live this weekend, O’Neal curated a hype-worthy playlist to get fans stoked on the upcoming California festival. Check out the Spotify playlist and her explanations for each track’s inclusion below! From August 16th to 19th, STS9 will host their inaugural Wave Spell Live Festival in Belden Town, California. Maddy O’Neal featuring Manic Focus – “Light In Your Eyes”: The first single off my new EP Dream State. One of my favorite tracks to date—both beautiful and grimey in its own way.Maddy O’Neal – “No Master Plan”: Although at this point, this one is a bit of an older production of mine, it’s still one of the most special songs to me because it’s the first time I wrote and sang my own lyrics on a track. Made it that much more personal to me.Maddy O’Neal featuring Marvel Years, Chris Karns, & Michelle Sarah – “Viral Love”: This track was such a badass super collab between all of us—Michelle’s vocals, Cory’s guitar, Chris’s cuts—I think this is one of the tracks that really transcends genres in such a cool way. Very proud of this one.Maddy O’Neal x Dreamers Delight – “Valkyrie”: Reed and I really combined our unique styles on this one. Every time I play it live, I feel this epicness of a journey in a way. That’s kind of what we were going for hence the title.Maribou State featuring Khruangbin – “Feel Good”: Recently discovered Maribou State, a producer duo, and then, a week later, they came out with a track with another favorite Khruangbin (who if you don’t know yet, you must check out). Super rad collaboration.Gabriel Garzón-Montano – “Keep On Running”: Recently discovered him. His music reminds me a lot of D’Angelo. It’s simple yet soulful. I can’t stop listening to it.Everydayz & Phazz – “Almeria”: One of my new favorite producer discoveries, and this song in particular. Everydayz from France. The flow between the sections, build up, and breakdown of instruments and elements keeps you on your toes throughout the song.
